The Marcus Red hockey team is undefeated through its first six games of the summer season. The forecast for their second half looks good as well.
The Marauders Red team has outscored its opponents 36-8, while four of the AT&T Metroplex High School Hockey League’s top 10 goal-scorers this summer, J.P. Quirion, Barret Turner, David Wirth and Brennon Phoenix, all play for the Red team.
Marcus Red’s Sean Garvey is also the top-ranked goalie through the first six games, with a 1.31 goals-against average, one shutout and six victories.
"They are playing extremely well right now," Marcus White coach Kenny Tyler said. "Things are really looking good for the fall season."
Marcus hopes to have two varsity level programs this fall, one in the Gold Division and one in the Silver Division. The Red team (6-0-0 this summer) would be the Gold Division team.
Just past the midway point of the summer season, the Marcus White team is 1-5, but Tyler said he is not concerned about his team’s record and said he has seen steady improvement each week. For the most part, the coach has been very pleased with the first half of the season, he said.
"I think we’re pretty happy right now," Tyler said. "Attendance has not been quite as strong as I would have wanted it. Overall, we are skating decent, and we are in all of the games. … When you’re having the same number of shots on goal as your opponents and you are right there with them until the very end, you have to be happy about that."
Marcus White’s Jake Consolver is the leading scorer in the summer league, with 14 points through the first six contests.
The Marcus Red and Marcus White teams will play each other at 6:30 p.m. on July 17 at the Farmers Branch StarCenter.
As for cross-town rival Flower Mound, the Jaguars are enjoying a strong summer season as well. Flower Mound opted to play in the NYTEX league and were undefeated through their first six contests (6-0-0) also.
The Jags have out-scored their opponents 52-12 through their first six games of the season, including a 12-1 drubbing of Colleyville on June 30.
Four of the top five and eight of the top 10 scorers in the league are from Flower Mound.
The Jaguars will next face Colleyville at 8 p.m. July 17 at NYTEX West Arena in North Richland Hills.
