The Lonnquist Notes

Next week we’ll talk a little more about recruiting. For now, the early observation is that the Division I talent in southern Denton County and Northeast Tarrant County could make for an interesting recruiting season.

When you look at Marcus’ prospects, the first two that stand out are offensive lineman Chase Douglas and wide receiver/defensive back Joel Free. Both have excellent 40 times – low- to mid- 4.0s – and have been to their share of junior camps back in the spring to get their names out there.

For Flower Mound, the most attractive are going to be wide receivers Collin Ashley and James Kelly. Those two also have speed to burn and should get a lot of program’s attention. Remember, Ashley is switching from defense to offense.

So there are at least four, but there are definitely others that will get considered. Talking with Marcus coach Bryan Erwin and Flower Mound coach Cody Vanderford, each is expecting to have an active season.

During this spring football season, Division I schools are evaluating these prospects and then putting together their depth charts and figuring where these players will fall.

As for the aforementioned four, the better impression they make, the better the offers could be. That said, it doesn’t mean that May is a make-or-break situation. But it could set up how the rest of the recruiting cycle unfolds.

I would expect there to be several commitments this summer.

Classic Battles

It’s a fun time to be around Flower Mound sports. Both the Jaguars softball and baseball teams are still alive in their postseasons and are in the middle of their series.

The softball team is into the Region I quarterfinals and is playing what is sure to be a classic matchup with Colleyville Heritage. The best-of-three series was scheduled to begin Thursday night at Flower Mound. The second game is scheduled to begin Friday at Colleyville Heritage. The potential third game is scheduled for Saturday.

These are a pair of teams that have enjoyed great seasons. But then, no one should be surprised at the job Wendy Massey has done with her ballclub. They are enjoying a great season at 24-6-2.

The team eliminated two very quality opponents in Keller and Irving Nimitz to get to this point.

As for Steve Stinson’s baseball team, this has been a season where leaning on tradition played a role in the Jaguars advancing to the area round of the playoffs, where they will are meeting District 7-5A champion Hurst L.D. Bell. That best-of-three series was scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Flower Mound. Game 2 is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday at L.D. Bell. The potential deciding third game is Saturday.

This was not a typical season for the Jaguars, who were 16-11-2 following their bi-district series victory over Grapevine. They are a younger team but dug down to keep their season going in the postseason.

But consider this year a great success for Flower Mound team sports, as volleyball, football, boys and girls basketball, softball and baseball all made the playoffs.

Finally

Marcus’ Emily Mathis enjoyed a great season for the girls tennis team as she advanced to the Class 5A state quarterfinals. Her season ended Monday when The Woodlands College Parkk’s Heather Steinbauer eliminated Mathis in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Nonetheless, you can probably be assured Mathis enjoyed the journey.
