Starting a Tradition

In spite of holding the Snyder football team to fewer points than any other playoff opponent had, the Argyle football season came to an end last Friday in a 34-27 loss to the Tigers.

The Eagles advanced to the regional quarterfinal round of the postseason in only their second year in 3A, and coach Todd Rodgers said that in itself is a huge achievement.

“We were fortunate enough to maintain reasonably good health throughout the course of a season,” Rodgers said. “For our football team to win two [playoff] football games and be challenging in the third one was an amazing accomplishment for our seniors. They had a great career at Argyle, and every year they were in high school, the varsity team made the playoffs. It was a real tribute to them to uphold the tradition ... and help establish a great legacy for everyone to follow.”

Argyle finished the season with a 10-3 mark.

Rodgers said he knew the game against Snyder was going to be one of his team’s biggest challenges.

“We went in knowing that they were a high-quality program,” Rodgers said. “Their offense has been averaging almost 50 points a game, so for us to hold them to 34 points and under their average was a positive way of looking at it, but it was not to our standards. ... We didn’t do enough to win the game, but on a larger scale, we held them to under what they were averaging.”

Rodgers said he has been pleased with the effort and work ethic his team has exhibited throughout the season.

“I’m very satisfied,” Rodgers said. “We thought we could play three or four weeks in the playoffs, and we made it three, so I was proud of the kids’ focus and determination. I have seen a great commitment over this last year — just a re-dedication from our seniors that they were going to do everything in their power to make sure that this football team was successful.”

Rodgers said he congratulated his players after the game on a great season and reminded them of what they had accomplished, and said he hopes his players learned an important lesson from the 2007 campaign.

“Moving up a classification was pretty big for us,” Rodgers said. “I hope they realize they can compete at this 3A level. ... I think if we can carry on a blueprint of this season as what it takes to be successful, I think that would be great.”
