Flower Mound defeated Colleyville Heritage 5-0 in the opening game of the regional quarterfinals on Thursday, and were leading 1-0 all the way until the last inning of the second game, when the Panthers rallied with two in the seventh to win.
On Saturday, the day of the senior prom, no less, Flower Mound crushed Colleyville 10-0 to advance to the regional semifinals against Weatherford.
"I thought we played pretty well in the first game against Colleyville," Massey said. "In Game 2, we lacked a little bit of focus, but in our last game, we definitely had the focus that we needed. That was our best of the three games, and we came through in a big way."
Massey said she made some changes to the lineup for Game 3, including moving Taylor Hoagland to the leadoff spot, because she was being intentionally walked in the first two games.
"She was not getting to swing much, so we decided to have her bat first," Massey said. "They could either pitch to her, or walk her and have a runner on with no outs."
Hoagland homered twice in the contest for the Lady Jaguars. Megan Brigance also hit a homerun for Flower Mound.
Massey said she thinks the loss in Game 2 ultimately benefited her team.
"That’s exactly what we told them," Massey said. "We told them that this is probably a blessing in disguise. There’s a reason it happened, and down the road in the playoffs, the further we get, there’s going to be that adversity, and there’s going to be that kind of pressure put on them, so they’re going to have to rise to the occasion."
Lauren Kennewell pitched a gem for the Lady Jags in Game 3, and Massey said she was especially impressed with the way her team responded to having to play on the day of their prom.
"I think that they are mentally tough, and I have definitely seen them grow in that area throughout the season," Massey said. "After Game 2, we told them, 'It happened; it happened for a reason; there’s nothing we can do about that, and it’s in the past.’ I told them, 'You have a choice; you can waaaa about prom, and having to play on a Saturday, or you can come to play and be ready to win. They came ready to win."
Flower Mound is in the midst of a three-game series with Weatherford that started yesterday, and will face the Kangaroos at 7 p.m. tonight at home.
