New Designs for Flower Mound Parkland Presented

Staff Writer

Responding to residents’ concerns about previous maintenance issues, Flower Mound Undeveloped Park Land Subcommittee members vowed at its May 6 meeting it wouldn’t create something it will not support.

Kathy Craig-Silvia voiced concern about trash in the proposed picnic areas featured in both design concepts for the Wilson Tract, one of several undeveloped parklands. She said her Bakers Branch neighborhood had been told that the town didn’t have staff to clean up trash that could attract wildlife, like coyotes and rodents.

"We’re not going to build something we’re not going to maintain," subcommittee member Karl Drescher Jr. responded, adding that the tracts will be maintained from 4B sales tax funding.

About 30 attended the public hearing at the Flower Mound Public Library to review a draft schematic of the proposed master plan for the undeveloped park properties of the Braden, Wilson, Ruff and Carmel tracts.

Most discussion centered on the two concepts for the Wilson Tract. Flower Mound Striders Running Club President Harry Otto suggested the tract include a pedestrian-only trail, at least 3 feet wide, for running events in town. Another suggestion was for a children’s outdoor playground.

The audience viewed three concepts for the Braden Tract. Residents suggested batting cage tunnels, instead of the coin-operated batting cages presented in the concepts.

Undeveloped master plan designer Larry O’Flinn, director of planning and landscape architecture for Fort Worth-based Dunaway Associates, is drafting concepts for the 5-acre Braden Tract at Bakersfield Park; the 25.5 acre Wilson Tract – which includes the separate 23.6 acres in the Ruff and Carmel areas – at Gerault Park; and 19 acres of undeveloped land at Post Oak Park. The master plan for all five tracts should be completed this September, he said.

Michael Martin, O’Flinn’s assistant, said they will take the public’s suggestions and they will address changes that need to be made and will incorporate them into Concept A of the Wilson Tract.

The second public hearing for the four tracts is scheduled for June 16 at the library.
