Developing Beauty

Flower Mound Roadways are Blooming with Wildflowers

Staff Writer

A partnership between Flower Mound’s Parks Department and the Texas Department of Transportation has germinated a beautification program for local parkland and public roadways.

Three projects are complete and the first segment of another project is expected to be finished this month.

"The beautification projects will enhance the town by putting the 'flower’ back in Flower Mound and beautifying our major thoroughfares," said Jack Jones, director of parks and recreation.

The town has worked simultaneously on several beautification projects. Landscaping along the north side of FM 3040 began in November, while wildflower planting at Fire Station #2, Bluebonnet Park and the north side of FM 3040, began in October.

Phase I of TxDOT’s Green Ribbon Project, a partnership with the town, is expected to be completed this month.

Its purpose is to incorporate landscape development into highway projects, said Patrick Haigh, Dallas District landscape architect for TxDOT. Some of the project’s funding is allocated to districts with counties that didn’t meet air quality standards, Haigh said.

The Dallas District, which includes Denton County, has received about $14 million, since the program’s inception in 2002. To date, about $1 million has been spent in Denton County.

The first phase of Flower Mound’s Green Ribbon Project focused on the medians of FM 1171 east of FM 2499 and on FM 3040. The project will have two additional phases – on FM 2499 and FM 1171 west of FM 2499.

The town also harvested 20 trees from the town’s tree farm this winter and transplanted them to Peacock Park and Grand Park. According to Jared Martin with Flower Mound’s Development and Environmental Services, there are about 180 trees remaining in the farm at the Environmental Learning Center, which is north of Forest Vista Elementary School.

TxDOT’s Statewide Transportation Enhancement Program Grant project for Flower Mound is expected to begin this month and includes landscaping along Morriss Road from FM 407 to FM 3040. The work is expected to take four to six months.
