The Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce, the Highland Village Business Association and the Lewisville Area Chamber of Commerce hosted the 2nd Annual Unity in Communities luncheon on Tuesday to recognize local nonprofit organizations and their service to the public.
In her introductory remarks, Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce Board Chairman Lori Walker outlined how participating businesses enable the local chambers of commerce to support area nonprofits and their services, which assist those in need within the communities.
"By giving back, everyone wins," Walker said.
The recipient of the 2007 Nonprofit of the Year Award was PediPlace, the pediatric medical care facility for children from birth to 18 years old.
According to government figures, Texas has one of the highest uninsured rates in the country; one of every five children, 20 percent, are uninsured. Texas is rated last out of the 50 states on the "best places for children to live" scale in terms of immunization rates, health care and dropout rates.
Founded in 1994, PediPlace provides medical services for Denton County children who have no access to such care due to economic, geographic or cultural barriers.
Accepting the award were PediPlace Business Manager Bob Painter and Development Officer Jasmin Holmstrup.
"We are truly grateful for this award," Holmstrup said. "In 2007, we [PediPlace staff] provided care for more than 6,000 children in more than 24,000 office visits and provided $600,000 worth of prescription medications."
The luncheon was sponsored by United Community Bank and was held at Celebrations Grand Ballroom in Highland Village.
In addition to Walker, additional speakers included Lewisville Area Chamber of Commerce Chair Elect Eyad Salloum, Highland Village Business Association representative Sue Thompson, United Community Bank President and CEO Gary Lewis, and the 2006 award recipient Children’s Advocacy Center of Denton County Executive Director Dan Leal.
Recognition presenters of all 20 local nonprofits nominated for the 2007 award were Lewisville Mayor Gene Carey, Highland Village Mayor Dianne Costa, and Flower Mound Town Council member Al Filidoro, in the absence of vacationing Mayor Jody Smith.
